Engagement Rings

Precious Metal Guide

Yellow Gold

Gold, the most popular precious metal color, is used to make the majority of fine jewelry on the market today, especially yellow gold engagement rings and wedding bands. The silver and copper alloys with which it is mixed give it a warm, lustrous appearance. Within the yellow gold family, there can be a significant difference in coloring depending on the karat weight—for example, an 18 karat yellow gold ring would be richer and more radiant in color than one weighing 14 karats or 10 karats.

Rose Gold

Rose gold jewelry, which is also referred to as a romantic metal, gets its striking color from the addition of copper and silver. The higher the copper percentage, the darker the rose coloration. The most precious rose gold, known as 'crown gold,' has a karat weight of 22. The more popular 14 karat rose gold is made up of 41.67% copper and 58.33% gold.

White Gold

White gold engagement and wedding rings, another common choice, get their gleaming silver hue from the addition of alloy metals such as palladium, zinc, copper, tin, and manganese. White gold jewelry of the highest quality is typically 18 karats, and is a combination of pure yellow gold and palladium. At Brilliance, we cover each of our white gold parts with a Rhodium plating, a gleaming, near-white metal coating that resembles platinum in appearance. To help preserve its original luster, white gold can be re-dipped in Rhodium on a regular basis.

Metal Finishes

Precious metals can be finished in a variety of ways to give the ring an appealing surface appearance. Among the most common metal finishes are:

    High polish

A high polish finish is gleaming and gleaming. It is the most commonly used finish for fine jewelry and elegant engagement rings.

    Satin vs Matte

The touch is smooth with a satin or matte finish. This is a common wedding ring finish because, although it is smooth, it is not shiny.

    Buffed

A polished finish has texture and a more distinct appearance. Since it shows little or no wear, this is a common option for men's bands.

    Hammered

Men's rings with hammered finishes are also common. The metal is hammered and then satin-finished to create a completely unique texture and style.
